Phoenix Houses of New England was founded in 1967 by a coalition of social service professionals, clergy, business, and political leaders in Providence, Rhode Island. Today, some 3,000 adults and teenagers receive alcohol and drug treatment annually through more than forty-five programs in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Fees are based on a sliding scale, and no client is denied treatment because of the inability to pay.

Adult Programs in New Hampshire

At Phoenix House in New Hampshire, we understand that substance abuse affects every aspect of a person’s life. Recovery means not only freedom from drugs, but also freedom from the past and freedom of choice in the future.

Phoenix House Keene offers a range of services including crisis intervention for those at high risk of using drugs or relapsing, a sobriety maintenance program, and clinically managed detoxification from alcohol or other drugs. Help is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Length of stay averages three to five days for crisis intervention, up to four weeks for clients enrolled in our sobriety maintenance program while awaiting placement in a residential treatment program, and up to six months for those who have completed residential treatment and need support and case management while transitioning back into the community.

Residential Treatment for Chemically Dependent and Dually Disordered Clients

Phoenix House Keene offers residential treatment for chemically dependent clients and those with a secondary co-occurring mental health diagnosis. These clients must be stable enough to focus on recovery from addiction. The typical length of stay is four to six weeks, followed by a referral to the next appropriate level of care.

Key components of the program include a structured daily schedule, individual and group therapies, expressive arts, community service, and self-help group attendance. The program provides education, support and aftercare planning, and, when necessary, psychiatric and medical evaluations.

Transitional Living

Phoenix House Keene Center also provides supportive transitional living for adults in the early stages of recovery. The program lasts from three to six months for those who have completed treatment. Assistance with job placement, financial planning, a weekly recovery support group and individual case management are also offered, along with optional attendance at self-help meetings.

Outpatient Treatment

Intensive Outpatient Treatment

Phoenix House Keene Center's Intensive Outpatient Treatment serves individuals over age 18 whose treatment needs warrant more than once-weekly sessions, but do not require a residential program. This group-based program provides evidence-based intensive group sessions three times each week for three hours. The program allows individuals to remain in the community, employed or attending school, and is a cost-effective step-up or step-down from other levels of care.

Adolescent Programs in New Hampshire

Phoenix House adolescent programs give kids a chance to break with the past and take control of their lives. Our residential programs provide substance abuse treatment in a safe and supportive environment.

Outpatient Treatment

SASY (Self Assessment Saturdays for Youth)

An educational group that targets young people (13 to 21 years of age) who are experimenting with alcohol and/or other drugs, this program consists of two four-hour classes (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) held on two consecutive Saturdays. Trained facilitators help participants assess their level of alcohol and other drug involvement and examine the potential effects of substance use on their lives. Topics covered in this program include:
* Knowing the signs of high risk use and addiction
* Making an assessment of one’s use of alcohol and/or other drugs
* Achieving success through examining values and activities, goals and support

If at any time during the program a youth is identified as more harmfully involved with alcohol or other drugs, he/she is referred for further assessment and treatment. Anyone can make a referral to the SASY program (parents, schools, courts, probation, etc.). Groups are age appropriate. The SASY program has been accepted by area courts and schools.

Outpatient Services for Youth and Adults

Outpatient services for youth and adults offered at Phoenix House Keene Center utilize evidence-based practices. All treatment begins with a full assessment, followed by weekly individual and family sessions. Length of treatment averages five to twelve weeks depending on individual needs. During and after treatment, positive development activities and continuing care services are suggested to help sustain a substance-free lifestyle. Booster clinical sessions are also available.
